The World Without You

Meanwhile, back across the other islands, the world did not stop in your absence. Three long weeks had passed.

Ylva took one last quiet walk through The Great Maw and Skalaness, sorrow clinging to her like pollen in spring. It followed her in every step, in every breath she took, in every glance she dared not to return as otherfel attempted to engage with her. At first, nofel noticed anything. Ylva had already become a ghost among them. It wasn’t until Freyja went to check on her that the truth had surfaced. Both Ylva and Hel were gone.

Hel had improved, yes… but not enough. Not enough to speak. Not enough to stand. Certainly not enough to travel. Freyja sought out Fenrir immediately, but the great father could only reassure her. He encouraged Freyja to be patient, to give Hel and Ylva the time they clearly needed to recover from what had transpired upon Haldor’s Pass. “They will return,” he told her. “When they are ready.” Fenrir truly believed every word. Whether that belief was genuinely truth… or hope… that remained to be seen.

Ylva looked back just once. When she did, The Great Maw stood behind her, vast and unmoving beneath the dim sky as it set over Ulfrheim once last time. Hel lay carefully secured within a carriage, tucked beneath heavy furs. The two were guided by her two most faithful horses. They moved at a steady, quiet pace beneath the cover of night. Where they were going? Nofel knew. And that was exactly how Ylva wanted it. Draped in cloaks, she hid both herself and Hel from wandering eyes as the two slipped quietly into the dark.

Fenrir had slowly healed from his own injuries. Despite the fact he was strong enough to walk on all fours again, he had not yet left The Great Maw. Often he could be seen sat upon its spires, watching the lightning fork across Haldor’s Pass hundreds of miles away. Something kept him rooted there. Duty perhaps? Exhaustion. A weight far beyond one mostfel might ever know.

Freyja had done her part. She had secured all nine tomes, locking them away safely behind magic drawn by Uhma’s own two paws. For now they were safe, untouchable.

Oracle was no longer in hiding. No. He claimed his place amongst the Felvarg in Haldor’s Pass. Beneath the silent storm that clung to the mountain, webbed in blue and black lightning that cracked across the sky without a sound. There, he and his army built an impressive fortress. Those who had strayed from the path of Alphas gathered to him. Quietly and willingly. His numbers grew not through force, but through belief. Flyers appeared across every island, each and every main city touched by his magic. An open invitation to be had, a promise, a claim. His Crescent Throne.

Vessra had not been idle either. The Briar Syndicate, her pack, had located the portal nestled deep within Maeleanott. The same portal Noctrix had lead you to. And through it, the Nattnkatt and Nattnkin spilled outward. Not just into Ulfrheim, but also Helvalla and Jörmungandr. They moved into the islands without remorse, but also without war. Their presence lingered like a shadow at the edge of vision. Always watching, asking, and searching. Not just for Fenrir, but for Hel. Those loyal to Fenrir kept him informed. Vessra was not subtle in her curiosity, and as a direct result every Alpha was on edge.

On the western reaches of Himravann, her pack began to build. A vessel of some kind. It was large, towering against the shores of Hongerige, deliberately placed. For what purpose? Nofel knew. And yet the Felvargs of Himravann—the quiet, old-souled guardians of that very forest—chose not to interfere. They watched, and some even quietly helped. For what reason? It was unclear.

Helvalla, for a time, knew peace. The Brunnrekka and Yggdravixen had settled among its locals, welcomed not as outsiders, but as kin long returned. Their presence brought a strange balance to the island, strength and magic woven together once more into something far greater than it once was. For the first time in what felt like ages… Helvalla could breathe.

Norn’s Weave stood complete. With Aurora missing, Nimh took her place among its people, guiding them alongside Odin, who remained as steady as ever. The city continued to grow in both numbers and allegiances. It became something more than it once was, a pillar. A place others turned to for safety. And though no crown had been placed upon his head, and no decree had been spoken to it, the inhabitants of Helvalla looked to Odin as their answer. Their calm in the storm. Each time, he refused, just as he had the last.

Nightfall had all but vanished. Not a trace, not a whisper, not a glimpse in the shadows. Somefel had claimed she had perished within the in-between—drowned when Miðhafsey bled into it, its waters swallowing everything she once controlled. Others were not so convinced, and you? You knew better. You knew Nightfall was forging something beyond what anyfel might understand.

And then? Then there was you. You. Grimara. Aurora. Skorgrim. Gone. The moment the portal opened within Niflheim once more, nofel had heard from you or anyone you shared that final night in Niflheim with.

And it would take the bravery of a titan’s love so broken, so cruelly torn apart, and so unwaveringly devoted to bring you home safely.

When Stars Sleep

The day weaves slowly into evening, the sunset framing the island in hues of pink, orange, and red, setting the land ablaze with rays of unfiltered light. The symphony of daytime creatures starts to fall silent, and a new, fresh chorus of nighttime creatures begins as they peep their heads out of their various dens and hides. Slowly, dusk comes into play as the sun sets beyond the horizon, a slight chill twining through the air as its warmth disappears from sight. You make your way through the underbrush of the forest, taking in deep breaths of the crisp, clear air that sings with energy even as daylight draws to a close.

Night falls gently upon the land, a soft cloak of darkness that settles itself against the world as sweetly as a loved one’s touch. Though you expect the moon to rise up and cast your surroundings in its silvery glow, as time wears on you come to the realization that tonight is the night of the new moon. There will be no natural light with which to guide you, leaving you to find your way on your own. The world becomes shadowed around you, making every leaf and tree look unfamiliar and strange. The sky above is endlessly dark, every star dimmed to nothingness and the moon hiding its face from the world as if shy and quiet.

As the last of the sun’s rays fade, darkness reigns supreme over every landmark, obscuring your vision and straining your eyes. Soon enough, you can barely make out any details of the forest or even the path that you’re on. It’s almost as if you’re moving with your eyes closed, blindly walking through the world like a newborn uncertain of how to balance yourself. The moon is black, the stars are sleeping, and while the chorus of animals around you let you know that you’re still alive, if they too fell silent you have to admit that you wouldn’t be sure whether or not the breath in your lungs is a trick of the night.

Still yet, you have to press on. How will you navigate this total darkness? Even the light of a lantern won’t pierce far into the gloom, leaving you with no choice but to rely on what light you can manage and your own intuition. Each pawstep must be made carefully, your senses on high alert for any predators lurking nearby. Hopefully your surroundings will be kind to you, for the light from above has abandoned you on this night.

Objective:

Depict or write your character navigating a night where the islands fall into complete darkness. With the moon and stars absent, show what light source they rely on as they move through the shadowed world.

Terror of the Deep

With the season's onslaught of seemingly nonstop rain, it brought with it a whirlpool of tides that swallowed the shores of Hongerige so viciously that most anyfel would be swept away in a blink. Many had gathered at the Docks of Hearth as they watched the relentless ocean churn and foam, the waves eager to lap at the sodden wood underpaw. With a groan, the wood panel beneath your paws creaked as you reached the end of one of the docks. With the rising sun, it was now turning into low tide, the water taking its brief leave, revealing a sandbar far out in the distance. As the waves made one last grab at the sandy shore, it receded at last, revealing a beautiful shore choked in shells, seaweed, and shallow pools.

What had appeared to be a moment of peace was abruptly interrupted by violent thrashing of fins against shallow water. Squinting against the sun that pierced the horizon was a form kicking up sand and debris as it wriggled side to side. Through the heat waves rising from the sand, the form came into shape, revealing Terror of the Deep who laid beached at the sandbar. Colors of crimson seeped and oozed from various wounds upon his sleek skin, the shallows meekly wicking it away as it pooled and stained the sand. By the weakening thrash of his tail, there was no time to lose.

You leapt from the docs with several other helping paws hot on your heels, one of them being Hel with a vial clutched tightly in her maw. She gestured for you to slow to her pace. She then tossed the vial your way and exclaimed with a pant, “The hide of a shark is thick and leathery, no ordinary salve will heal such wounds!” She stopped in her tracks, spraying sand in her wake as you raced ahead, she bowed her head before reeling around to bolt back to the docks in case more healing salves needed to be brewed. Seaweed threatened to slow you down, tangling around your legs as you made a sprint for Terror of the Deep. Legs burning, you finally slow down to a trot, your paws sinking in the wet sand. Careful to stay within the beast's field of vision as you approached, your movements were slow and intentional. His gills flared in panic as he read your gaze, the promise of the tide returning was too far out. It was up to you to tend to his wounds and see him back to the ocean.

Objective:

Depict or write your character tending to the Terror of the Deep’s wounds with the healing salve given to you by Hel, with the intention to guide him back into the ocean.

Chapter 5, Phase 8 - Storybook

Response To: 'The World Without You'

Grimara and Nightfall had spent weeks preparing an army fit to ravage Ulfrheim. Deep within the frozen reaches of Niflheim they had gathered followers, the darkest of magic wielders, and readied themselves beside the portal resting beneath Frostfall Lake. Helvalla had never truly been their destination, not really. It was the Crescent Throne they wanted. To get it they would need to go to Ulfrheim first. But what they had not prepared for was Neebo.

In his panic to protect both the Brunnrekka and Yggdravixen, he had sealed the pathways entirely, collapsing the bridge between the two realms before Grimara could force her army through it. Every attempt to reopen the crossing by both her and Nightfall had failed. That was until Skorgrim of course.

The moment Grimara realized who he truly was, how could she possibly say no? Aurora may have possessed blood capable of answering Helvalla itself through her fated ties to the island, but Skorgrim sat before her now like a gift placed carefully into her paws by fate itself. Fenrir's bloodline. Powerful blood that would surely answer her call. Enough, Grimara hoped, to force the veil apart.

Very quickly after Skorgrim's blood hissed eagerly into the flames, Grimara realized something was wrong. The portal convulsed violently before them, crimson and gold magic thrashing outward hard enough to batter everyone standing too close, as though the breach itself was lashing out in pain.

"No..." Grimara breathed sharply, staggering backwards as she fought against the violent bursts of magic. "No, that's impossible!"

Just hours prior, Ylva had guided Hel's two fjord horses slowly toward the highest peaks of Helheim's Gate at Hel's request. The journey had been agonizingly slow, Hel barely able to keep herself upright for more than a few moments at a time. Ylva hated the look of pain etched into her features as the carriage rolled over the rocky terrain. She hated the weakness in her movements. More than once Hel caught Ylva staring at her with that same unbearable grief she had carried ever since Haldor's Pass. Hel couldn't help but feel responsible for it.

Maybe if they had never become soulbound to begin with, Ylva would still have her family. Maybe she would still be seen. Loved openly instead of spoken about in whispers and judgemental glares. But none of that mattered now. Hel had promised Ylva she would take them somewhere safe, and she would be damned if her injuries stopped her from giving the two of them peace at last.

Weakly, Ylva helped Hel onto all fours as another violent cough wracked her chest.

"Are you sure you're alright, love?" Ylva spoke softly.

Hel lifted her gaze toward Ylva, finding strength in the devotion that reflected back at her through tear-glossed eyes. "I'm alright, my love," Hel whispered back softly. "Step back please."

Ylva hesitated, but eventually retreated as instructed while Hel dragged herself toward the edge of Helheim's Gate. Darkness churned violently beneath the mountain peaks, the void below groaning as blackened eosteric magic slowly spread outward beneath Hel's now trembling paws. She closed her eyes tightly to focus.

"As above..." she whispered beneath her breath.

The void answered immediately, its roar shaking the mountain itself as Ylva attempted to ground herself.

"...so below," Hel finished.

The tallest peak erected before them burst into a radiant and blinding light. The pulse exploded outward violently, racing down through Helheim's Gate and deep into the winding paths below as stone cracked apart beneath the force. Massive boulders splintered free from the cliffsides as they thundered downward into the darkness beneath. And in that exact same moment, Grimara's portal ruptured.

Blood magic collided violently with eosteric magic as both portals opened simultaneously across both Ulfrheim and Niflheim, the forces twisting together into something corrupted and unknown. Crimson and golden light folded inward upon itself as though reality itself could no longer withstand the pressure between them. Every soul caught within either portal was consumed instantly, light swallowing everything and everyfel whole.

You were battered by the raw and unshaped magic, elemental forces tearing you around so quickly your mind could hardly comprehend what was happening. Fire became ocean, ice became rain, and wind screamed loud enough to deafen everyfel before collapsing suddenly into silence. You plummeted for what felt like an eternity, the silence embracing you, until a sudden and jarring impact brought you back to reality with startling focus.

You groaned softly as you pulled yourself back onto all fours, savaged by yet another portal after what felt like endless years tumbling through nothingness. Golden shores stretched endlessly around you beneath unfamiliar heavens above, glowing softly below strange constellations overhead.

Nearby, Ylva was already helping Hel steady herself while Grimara stared openly in disbelief at the landscape surrounding them. Skorgrim quickly pulled himself upright, shaking out his coat, while Aurora slowly rose further down the shoreline, confusion painted clearly across her expression. For a long moment nofel spoke. Then finally Ylva broke the silence.

"What happened?"

Hel looked just as unsettled as everyfel by the answer as she spoke it.

"I opened a portal to Hymnlaeja," she admitted, glancing around at the others now gathered along the shoreline. "What are all of you doing here?"

Aurora's ears pinned back tight against her head as Grimara explained their own attempt to force passage from Niflheim to Ulfrheim. Realization slowly surfaced in Hel's expression.

"The portal I opened..." she began carefully, "was only meant for Ylva and I. It was a one way ticket, so there is no intention to return."

You exchanged a confused look with Aurora, though Ylva refused to meet either of your gazes. An awkward silence settled over the group before Hel finally cleared her throat.

"There is another way. Jrmungandr was my gift to Loki. Because of that... I can still call upon a portal to Jrmungandr. Even here."

The moment Loki's name left Hel's lips, something dark flashed across Aurora's expression. It was painted in clear shades of frustration, bitterness, and pain.

What in Fenrir's name was she preparing for?

Something seems... suspicious here. The shores of Hongerige have grown unusually quiet, save for the occasional rustle of crates being dragged beneath the cover of night. Freyja continued to catch the sight of several Yggdravixen slinking around the Emporium after hours, tails twitching, whispering amongst themselves before disappearing toward the docks.

Perhaps you should check it out?
