Chapter 6, Phase 2 - Storybook
Response To: 'The Promise of Rime'
Oracle stood proudly on all fours as those brave enough to join him passed Fenrir one by one, until an army stood behind him worthy of etching itself into history. Even still, not a whisper was exchanged. Fenrir watched, not in disappointment, but in heartbreak. In worry. Freyja leaned into him to offer what little comfort she could, and this time he did not pull away, though he did not entirely welcome her embrace either. He was wounded by what unfolded before him, and there was little anyfel could do to mend a wound carved so deeply within.
Orvar still writhed upon the ground beside Oracle, no more than a few dozen pawsteps away. Fenrir could feel the beast’s pain from where he stood. Orvar’s eyes flitted open just long enough to seek out Fenrir’s gaze before another wave of agony forced them closed. Beneath his armored shell, Fenrir watched the spirit within expand with a desperate gasp before collapsing against the walls of his prison once more. He could relate. That was how Fenrir felt now. Trapped within himself, lost at sea, surrounded by those he loved and somehow entirely alone.
Oracle approached Orvar carefully. The beast could do little to free himself from the blackened magic that still coiled around his weak body, pinning steel and spirit alike firmly against the scorched earth. Oracle cleared his throat before looking to those who had chosen to stand behind him. “Let us be rid of this beast. Let us bring him peace in the afterlife, so he may hurt no otherfel on Ulfrheim.”
Fenrir could feel fury building within his chest as he watched in disbelief. Surely Oracle would not strike the beast down here, in front of everyfel. His eyes moved toward those who had crossed over to Oracle only moments before. They watched in silence. If they allowed this to happen, if not one of them stepped forward to stop him, Fenrir knew he would never forgive them. Oracle moved closer to Orvar as the beast roared out in panic, and just as he whispered an incantation beneath his breath, Fenrir charged forward in a fit of blind rage. Oracle spun immediately to meet him on the defensive.
Chaos nearly unfolded before everything surrounding you turned a brilliant shade of gold.
The light overtook your vision entirely, washing across Rime in brilliant rays as the spectral animals that had poured free from the Shrine of Freyja raced into the village. Wolves, stags, foxes, and birds leapt and soared around everyfel aimlessly, as though charting every nook and corner of the newly named village for themselves. When the brilliance finally subsided enough for your vision to return, Hymn stood proudly above Orvar, bathed in equal brilliance of her own. Her voice was soft. Angelic. A goddess in her own right, each word followed by a gentle and soothing echo despite her mouth never moving. “Freyja, Mother of Felvargs. We meet again.”
Freyja immediately lowered herself to a respectful bow. Several others followed her movement without hesitation, clearly having recognized Hymn as an array of gasps surfaced. “Hymn, Goddess of Light. You bless us all with your presence,” Freyja returned.
Hymn lowered herself beside Orvar, landing with a delicacy that words could scarcely describe. “Stand, child.”
Freyja obeyed. Hymn’s attention moved instead to Fenrir, finding the sorrow and anger painted clearly within his gaze. “Fenrir, Great Father. Fear not for the future. Fear not, for the sun shall rise each day and paint your grey a shade of brilliant beauty.” Fenrir fought desperately against the tears threatening to break free as he looked toward those he felt had betrayed him, then back to Hymn. “They will always be your children. They will always find their way back to you, Fenrir, for you have sacrificed everything so that they may stand here today. Do not forget your purpose, child. Do not lose your way.” Hymn looked to Oracle now. “Do not harm this creature. He is merely a pawn within Nightfall’s grasp.”
Oracle’s temper finally broke. “So he can destroy our village again?” he lashed back. “Kill our people?”
Hymn did not meet his anger with her own. Instead she remained perfectly calm as she approached Orvar. The beast continued to writhe beneath Oracle’s magic until the very moment Hymn made contact with him. Immediately Orvar relaxed beneath her touch. The blackened magic surrounding him recoiled violently, writhing against her brilliance before burning away into nothing. After a moment of silence, Orvar finally rose to all fours slowly.
Only now, when he towered over everyfel once more, there was something different in his expression. Something softer. He pulled himself free from Hymn and began walking forward, causing those gathered nearby to retreat cautiously from his path. He did not pursue them, instead he moved carefully. Orvar approached Fenrir now, everyfel surrounding the Great Father backed away except for Freyja, who remained firmly and bravely at his side. Stood face to face with Fenrir now, Orvar released a soft electric cheep.
Fenrir leaned forward and whispered something softly to Orvar. Nofel could hear what was exchanged between them, but when he finished, Orvar twisted his massive iron head to one side like a confused, oversized lapdog. The metal plates on his tail flitted side to side passively.
“Come now, Orvar. We must go home.”
Hymn’s voice broke the silence. Orvar looked toward her, then back to Fenrir one final time before leaping into the sky. His armored body disappeared among the roaring spirit animals overhead as they twisted together through the storm in brilliant ribbons of gold. “May we meet again, Freyja. As fate would have us,” Hymn spoke softly.
Two of Oracle’s sentinels stepped forward to stop him from advancing any closer to the goddess, but Hymn neither moved nor paid him any mind.
“Fenrir.”
The Great Father turned his attention toward her.
“Ylva sends her love.”
Fenrir’s eyes widened, but before he could respond Hymn leapt into the heavens. She locked eyes with Oracle one final time as she ascended, and though she did not speak another word, everyfel surrounding him could sense the uncertainty within her gaze. Then, just as suddenly as they had arrived, the spectral creatures followed their goddess into the storm, carrying Orvar with them toward Hymnlaeja.

1x Fenrir’s Keepsake (BoA), 1x Freyja’s Keepsake (BoA)
