Chapter 5, Phase 7 - Storybook
Response To: 'The Queen Behind the Veil'
You and Aurora did your best to relax into the settlement peacefully and quietly, careful not to be seen or heard. A warm meal had been secured in a nearby tavern, the two of you sitting at the table furthest from view. The innkeeper paid neither of you any mind, clearly numb to the many species and presences that passed through. Neither you nor Aurora would be the first or last Felvarg she would see. Aurora made note of this as she documented everything right before you.
When dusk finally settled in, something about this strange place changed almost immediately. Silence fell over the courtyard as various Brunnrekka began tending to the bonfire at its center, blue embers drifting high into the sky above it. It didn’t take very long for Aurora to spot Grimara. She looked exactly as Aurora’s contact had described, laced in bone jewelry. Grimara spotted you from across the square, your eye contact causing her to stop mid-conversation. She shooed those she had been speaking to away and began advancing toward you and Aurora calmly. This was when Aurora began to panic, but you did your best to keep her steady. Before long, Grimara stood before the two of you.
“Well, well, well… look what the rekka dragged in,” Grimara said as she sat down before you, far too comfortably in truth.
You couldn’t help but notice the entire courtyard now had eyes on you. Three, what appeared to be bodyguards, stood just out of reach behind her, though you weren’t quite sure if they were protecting her… or her them.
Aurora bowed her head respectfully as she cleared her throat in an attempt to keep the peace. “Grimara, yes?”
Grimara glanced behind herself, giving some sort of silent signal. One of the rekka turned and trotted off without a word.
“In the flesh,” she responded enthusiastically, narrowing her eyes at Aurora curiously, “And what would a creature such as yourself want with me?”
“You see,” Aurora started, “We hail from an island known as—”
“Ulfrheim.” Grimara cut her off, standing now, her voice carrying louder through the courtyard as if she were speaking for everyone, “Yes, we know who you are, child of Fenrir.” The courtyard behind her broke into low chatter and whispers. “You come to me,” Grimara called out as she began to pace, “In search of a portal, do you not?”
Aurora glanced at you nervously before answering, almost as if she were giving you a moment to stop her from responding. “Yes… we’re trying to go home.”
Grimara let out a long, thoughtful hum before turning and walking back toward the bonfire burning blue. You and Aurora were urged forward by a low, encouraging growl that sounded behind the both of you, which you quickly clocked as a few gnarly Brunrekka that pressed in.
“Portals are not free,” Grimara called back, “Nor are they easy to conjure. The favor you ask of me is one I fear costs more than you can pay.”
Aurora’s expression shifted, worry setting in deeper now. “What is it you need?”
Grimara smirked faintly at a nearby caster, you were sure you saw it, but when she turned back, her expression was neutral again. You didn’t trust her, and you would be right not to.
“Name your price,” Aurora called out impatiently when Grimara didn’t answer straight away.
“Gold will not build you portals, hollow-pelt!” Grimara snapped back in irritation to Aurora’s demands.
Aurora’s ears pinned back at the insult. She didn’t have to be a Brunnrekka to know it was one.
“You are snowblind, fool,” Grimara continued. “It would require blood. And not just any blood. Blood of a creature from your island that aided in its creation.”
Your heart sank. Loki… or Fenrir perhaps? Aurora furrowed her brows, thinking. Her lover would most certainly do such a favor for her had he understood she needed him. There it was again, the feeling Aurora knew all too well as she took a moment to mourn the distance between them.
“Perhaps my own?” Aurora looked down at her own two paws as she contemplated. Aurora was Loki’s soulmate after all, but you wondered if that meant her blood could carry such a weight as well.
Grimara raised a brow, clearly intrigued. “Perhaps your own?” she echoed, opening an arm toward the violent fire. “Let us see then.”
Aurora stepped forward cautiously, her tail low now. Just as one of Grimara’s goons moved to restrain her, they were interrupted.
“It won’t work!” The voice cut clean through the courtyard with a resounding certainty. All eyes turned now to canvas the crowd in search of it.
“And what do you know, creature?” Grimara called out.
The cloaked figure stepped forward, and pulled back the drapes that shielded them. You recognized him almost immediately, not by name, but memory. It was the same Felvarg you and Ylva had a spat with on Haldor’s Pass not long ago.
“You said it yourself,” he continued, “Blood of a creature from the island that aided in its creation.”
It wasn’t just you and Aurora that were confused—-the entire camp was as they exchanged conversations amongst the chaos.
“Enough!” Grimara snapped, cutting through the noise. She tilted her head to one side ominously as she encouraged the creature to speak. “And?”
“And? Use my blood,” Skorgrim spat out.
Aurora frowned deeper as your eyes met, the confusion clearly painted across it. “Do you know him?” she whispered. You didn’t get the chance to answer when Skorgrim continued.
“Surely the son of Fenrir himself would do?” Skorgrim added as he witnessed Aurora judging his claim. Your thoughts stalled. Son of Fenrir? You’d never seen him before Haldor’s Pass, and surely he was far too old to have been born without your knowledge?
Grimara laughed. “It would take more than a bastard bred years after the fact.”
“Bastard?” Skorgrim chuffed. “You insult me, mawjaw.” Grimara had to quickly call off the rekka left and right of her as Skorgrim continued to speak. “I am his second-born son. Brother of Ulfr, and Bjorn. Of Ylva.”
Aurora gasped audibly as she charged forward, Grimara’s goons intercepting her advance. “You lie, filth!”
“It is no lie!” Skorgrim snapped back, his voice sharp. “What? Did your precious Fenrir lie to you? You thought Ulfr, Bjorn, and Ylva were all there was to his first litter as a Felvarg? Oh… the trinity.” Skorgrim threw his head sideways, almost as if to mock the word. At this point Skorgrim let his cape fall to the stone cobble courtyard beneath them.
“I was curled away in the warmth of my den,” he continued, his voice more sorrowful now. “It was Skoll who ripped me from safety. From a feeling I've been mourning since the day it was stolen from me!” Skorgrim spat across the courtyard now as his words were charged with fury, “Where was Fenrir then?”
Aurora’s eyes grew wide in disbelief, her mouth opened but no words came out.
“Quaternity,” Skorgrim whispered beneath his breath, lowering his head in defeat. “Neither here nor there is it? Use my blood. Skorgrim, Son of Fenrir. I’ll prove it.”
Grimara looked amused as she welcomed Skorgrim forward without words. Her smirk was back, only this time she didn’t bother hiding it. Only now as Skorgrim got closer did it dawn on you. He was the one who leapt into the portal the night you and Aurora spoke with Neebo at Chillgleam on Frostfall Lake. He was why Neebo closed the portal into Niflheim.
Skrogrim snatched the blade from one of Grimara’s goons before they could restrain him. He snarled at them, charging towards them in both directions. “I’ll do it myself.” They backed off immediately, cowed perhaps by the look in his eyes.
Skorgrim looked to you now, his expression hollow, unchanged, he never broke eye contact with you as he sliced the blade across his own foreleg. You could hear Grimara’s voice in a soft whisper as his blood trickled down his leg, spilling onto the courtyard. “The stone remembers, and snow breaks all tracks. As certain as the glacier. As old as the ice.”
Skorgrim’s blood traveled through the cobble cracks, clearly drawn to the flames. It roared back in response, shooting into the sky where it erupted into a wave of blue and all-consuming black.
Grimara smirked, glancing between you and Aurora. “If it’s a portal you want… it’s a portal you’ll get.”
Her laughter echoed through the courtyard as the world around you began to fade into darkness. All you could hear was Skorgrim screaming in agony. Demanding they release him as his cries sliced through the gloom. And then? Everything fell to silence. Peace at last in the nothingness that followed.
