Tanaka was not always evil. In fact, before the Dark Matter took hold of him, he was a very bright, just, and courageous individual. He was playful and curious with a mischievous sense of humor, often getting himself and his brothers and friends into trouble. Of course, his charisma and charming wits were usually enough to get them out of it as well. This was Light Tanaka.

Dark Tanaka, however, is a mere shadow of the individual he once was. Though much of his personality remains the same, there is a sinister edge to his character that was never there before. He has become vindictive, malicious, obsessive of maintaining the power and prestige of the Morikami clan. There is often a vacancy in his eyes, as though he has fallen deep within and is no longer in control.

When the Dark Matter triggers his mind to kill those it sees as threats, there is a wildness in his eyes and a viciousness in his tone, which when paired with his beautifully seductive voice, instills a contradicting feeling of comfort mingled with despair and horror.
History

Tanaka was the first pup born to Rito and Reina Morikami, and therefore not only the heir to the clan but to the Harvest Moon society as well. The pressures of his position became noticeable to him at a young age, when Rito began preparing him for the lofty responsibilities that would one day rest upon his shoulders. Rito was much more strict and harsh upon Tanaka than his two younger siblings, Shingo the middle child, and Wren the youngest. Though this unfair treatment instilled a bitterness in Tanaka, he directed the emotion towards Rito rather than his innocent younger siblings.

When Tanaka was a teen, Rito began to teach him the more intense rituals and magic he would have to master as the high priest in order to protect the clans from the most dangerous and powerful monsters from the veil. He warned him of the Dark Matter, a mysterious entity that corrupts anything that it seeps its shadows into, and that he must never engage with this entity but immediately block his mind with the strongest protection spell, and escape the veil. Unfortunately, though Tanaka heeded his father’s warning, the Dark Matter is cunning. 

Tanaka and Shingo were driving a hoard of monsters back through the veil, having to travel deep within to return them to caves from which they escaped. Deep within those caves, the Dark Matter closed in around them, choking the life from the very air they needed. Shingo was not as strong as Tanaka, and suffered immensely from the lack of oxygen, to the point that he could not utter the protection spell. To save his little brother, Tanaka used the protection spell to seal Shingo’s mind instead of his own, grabbing him and rushing to escape. However, the Dark Matter seeped into his mind, its shadows creeping in and whispering. 

Chains of darkness wrapped tightly around his legs and neck as the Dark Matter forced a horrific vision upon him, showing him things that through him it would commit to gain ultimate power in both the material and the veil. The vision presented horrors so vile it made him sick, the dread that washed over him was unimaginable. 

Though the vision ended and the chains released, no matter how far Tanaka ran he could not escape the Dark Matter, for once it takes root it will never let go, driving its host completely mad and taking full control.

Willow #7304

Son - though Tanaka had always wanted a child to raise, by the time Willow was born he had already been corrupted by the Dark Matter. At that point, Willow’s only purpose in Dark Tanaka’s eyes was to be an heir to his power as high priest of Harvest Moon and alpha of the Morikami clan. 

Shingo #7910

Younger brother - Tanaka was very close with Shingo, the two did almost everything together when they were pups and even spent a lot of time together as teens and young adults. Tanaka was very protective of Shingo, who followed him everywhere like his little shadow. He even sacrificed himself to protect Shingo from the Dark Matter, not knowing the horrors that would come about as a result.

Wrenfayr #8951

Youngest brother - Wren is five years younger than Shingo, and six years younger than Tanaka, the baby of the family. Though Tanaka was closest with Shingo, he often doted on his baby brother, adoring him just the same. Still, Wren was more aloof and usually played on his own.
