The Queen Behind the Veil

The journey across Niflheim feels endless. The cold alone would have made the distance unbearable, but the quiet stretches of wilderness seem determined to drag each hour out even further. Snow crunches beneath your paws as you and Aurora move from one town to the next, the rhythm of travel broken only by the warmth offered inside the many taverns and inns scattered across the frozen landscape. It doesn’t take long for you to understand that hospitality here comes easily to the Brunnrekka.

Each hearth you pass is the same, doors opening wide without hesitation. Food offered and then passed warmly into your grasp. Thick furs? Offered without question, wrapped around you they feel like safety and home. No suspicious glances upon you, and nofel seems troubled by the fact you are not one of their own. Their values are simple yet proudly worn upon their thick hides. Rest? Warmth? Peace? A warm meal in your stomach. The Brunnrekka value the simplicity of existence, and they understand how to make the most of it.

The Yggdravixen weave through Niflheim just as the Brunnrekka do. Their smaller figures dart between the towering figures of each Brunnrekka, carrying bundles of herbs, tending fires, whispering quiet spells that keep the biting cold from creeping too far indoors. Their magic and agility work effortlessly alongside the strength of the Brunnrekka, like two cogs turning the same wheel. The two very different in form, yet working seamlessly together as equals.

Aurora speaks little during the journey to find Grimara. Each time you ask about the mysterious rekka she gives you nothing but vague answers, brushing the question aside as though the name itself makes her nervous. She is hiding something, but what? By the time the two of you reached the place circled upon Aurora’s weathered map, the forest suddenly changed. It felt so sudden, almost as if you blinked.

The snow here has taken on a strange bluish tint, and the trees stand darker than those you passed before. Their branches stretch overhead like a ribcage, offering a trapped feeling that caused your chest to tighten. The air carries a faint hint of rot, subtle yet unmistakable. Despite there being no obvious sign of death, the smell clings to the back of your throat, thick in the air. Movement in the shadows catch your eye more than once. Figures lurking in the dark, passing silently through the hulking trees. Yggdravixen and Brunnrekka alike, cloaked in dark robes, their voices lower than a hum as they chant while marching through the forest thicket. When your eyes meet the piercing blue gaze of one Brunnrekka, the creature pauses for only a moment before continuing onward as if you weren’t worth more than the 3 seconds it offered you.

Aurora stops rather abruptly and you nearly crash into her. “It doesn’t make sense,” she mutters to herself quietly, studying the map again as she squints through the darkness. “It should be right here.”

You glance left and right, but you’re met with nothing. Only the trees, blankets of snow, and an eerie silence. Aurora stares harder, turning slowly as though the hut she had been searching for would magically reveal itself if she looked at the forest from the right angle. When nothing changes, something inside Aurora snaps out of nowhere. Her frustration erupts all at once as she storms through the clearing in tight circles, muttering under her breath nearly inaudibly. Tears begin to spill down her face uncontrollably as the weight of everything finally crashes down upon her. “I’m finished,” she chokes out. Only then does she repeat them again, each one laced with more hurt than the last, “I’m finished… I’m FINISHED.” The final shout tears free from her throat, a certain raw desperation threaded so intimately in each declaration.

In a fit of anger Aurora hurls the map into the darkness, but the two of you freeze when you notice the map never lands on the forest floor. Instead the scroll levitates in mid air after a violent jolt, as though something invisible has caught it. Both of you stare as the map trembles violently in the air before beginning to curl inward until something completely devours it from sight.

Aurora steps forward cautiously, eyes fixed on the empty space where the map had been floating. Her paw presses against something unseen, a barrier of sorts as she glances back at you. You shake your head immediately left and right. But the look in her eyes is already a familiar sight. It is the same reckless glint you saw when she leapt into the portal to Niflheim. Aurora tests the barrier once more, sliding her paw through before quickly pulling it back again. The next time she pushes deeper, curiosity overpowering her hesitation as always. A few moments pass before Aurora’s head appears through the barrier, the words she had spoken causing you to deflate, “You’re going to want to see this.”

Your shoulders sag even further before you let out an exhausted sigh. With hesitation you step forward until your paw meets the barrier just as she had. The barrier is warm to the touch. Somehow wet, yet also completely dry. The magic shifts beneath your touch like it is alive, reacting to your presence as though it can feel your heartbeat. You close your eyes and push through in an attempt to get it over with and suddenly the world explodes to life with noise.

A roaring courtyard unfolds before you, alive with the rustle and bustle of any active city. Huts line the open space in rows, and in the center of it all a fortress built of wood and stone. Smoke curls into the sky from dozens of fires as creatures of all shapes and sizes move freely through the courtyard. Not just species familiar to you, but also some you’ve never seen before. Voices mingle together in laughter, arguments, and casual conversation as life carries on around you blissfully unaware of you and Aurora. You stand now frozen beside the curly Felvarg as what unfurls before you leaves you speechless. What the hell?

Objective:

Depict or write your Character within the hidden settlement that is concealed deep within Niflheim’s forest. Shrouded huts and towering structures wrap around a rather lively courtyard. Light from many flickering flames dance across packed snow and worn stone paths. As night settles over the icy city, a grand bonfire is lit at the courtyard’s center. Its flames burn an unnatural shade of blue, laced with magic that twists ominously as it rises into the cold night air. Beneath those dancing blue flames, seek out Grimara and finally learn the truth behind Aurora’s desperate journey. Be mindful you must include Grimara in your submission.

Reward:

What Waits Within

As the evening dusk arrives and the sun settles behind the highest peaks of Fenrir’s Incisor, you find yourself traveling back to your home den on a slightly overgrown forest path. Distant chirps travel through the air while the forest is still, leaves rustling gently in the soft breeze. You barely feel the small pebbles underneath your paws, but enough to get the feeling of a solid, hard surface. As the darkness washes over you and night takes over the skies, you stop on your pawsteps and glance up to see the very first and brightest stars glimmering through the canopy hanging overhead. The wind picks up momentarily and a sudden gust of wind blows a dry leaf to your face, breaking the tranquility of your stargazing. You shake your head and continue your way back home, as the leaf sways in the air and lands on the path behind you, letting no sound.

The air grows cooler as the twilight deepens and the chirps have been replaced with silence. It feels as if the forest around you is in a deep slumber. You catch echoes from soft coos of owls, yet they are so silent somefel could easily miss them. The pebbles get more scarce on the path as you traverse further, feeling more and more soft dirt beneath your feet. The treeline lets through slight trails of the moonlight, lighting your way in the darkness. You pick up more familiar scents the closer home you get—the evergreen pine trees, blooming wildflowers and the remnants of the distant village feast. “Home, finally.” you sigh in relief.

An uneasy feeling surges through you and something looms in the air as you're close, as if there is something that doesn’t quite belong. The forest remains still, and nothing is out of place or unusual, at least what your eyes could see. You halt to take a deep breath with your eyes closed to pinpoint what it is you’re sensing, taking in the environment and all the scents as if they were the very air you breathe to survive. After only a brief moment, your eyes snap open as you catch an unfamiliar scent lingering in the air. You frown, trying to discern something familiar in the unknown presence, yet you’re met with nothing. You continue your way, only to be greeted by the unexpected visitor right at your home.

You try to make sense of what is stirring inside you, observing the feelings and thoughts running through your head. What waited for you at your home wasn’t expected in the slightest, yet it remains a question how to react in this moment.

Objective:

Depict or write your character returning home only to find someone — or something — waiting for them. Show how they respond to the unexpected visitor, whether it be a friend, rival, spirit, stranger, or enigmatic object.

Reward:

Hrungnir

With a drawn out, high scraping sound, the sheets of floating ice that once consumed the surface of Hongerige have begun cracking and splitting. As the ice opened up and spread across the ocean, currents rushed through the bergs bringing with it a surplus of fish. Their scales sparkled like stars as they sliced through the water, the movements elegant and swift. They teased the surface of the water, coming close yet not dared break the tension as they swam in large schools. Helvallians gathered at the shores of Eptara’s Way, their chatter lighthearted as excitement buzzed in the warm air. They rejoiced in the arrival of spring, readying their ships to begin their excursions across the seas as they prepared for the fishing season.

With the sails catching the wind that so eagerly whipped across Eptara’s Way, the ships were off to sea. They pushed the ice caps gently out of the way as they slid through the waves, creating large open waters in their wake. As howls rang into the skies, a gasp had gripped those watching the water closely. A dark figure slithered between the ice, moving skillfully and with great intent as it gained on the ships. With a low creaking sound, one of the ships began swaying, knocked by the shadow as it swam by. You leaned over the railings of the ship you boarded in an attempt to get a better look before being yanked back in alarm as the dark figure quickly surfaced. One by one, tentacles of a great squid slowly crept out of the water, running along the outside of the ship like a snake as it tried to detect any possible fish on board. “Hrungnir inbound!” onefel yowled out, their voice laced in horror. You ran to the heart mast of the ship and grabbed hold as wood began to splinter beneath the grasp of the squid, breaking like mere twigs under the pressure.

Hrungnir roared, bubbles foaming as he broke the surface of the waves. “We’ve no fish yet, beast!” a captain rang out, but the giant squid simply ignored such words. Hrungnir’s arms thrashed as he searched, spraying ice and water upon the decks of the ships. It was clear the famished beast would not give up his pursuit so easily or quickly. You quickly thought to yourself, if fish is what this beast wanted, fish is what he would get. It appeared there was only one choice in the matter, distract Hrungnir with a haul of last season's frozen fish so that new fleets could travel safely through Eptara’s Way. You scurried up the decks and climbed partially up the netting to get a good vantage. You must be quick in sending out a decoy ship for Hrungnir, as the ships around you stood no chance against the hunger of such a large creature.

Objective:

Depict or write your character organizing and sending a decoy ship filled to the brim with fish into the treacherous waters to distract Hrungnir so that the boats with fisherfel may get through Eptara’s Way safely.

Chapter 5, Phase 6 - Storybook

Response To: 'Between Frost and Flame'

You find it somehow easy to rest within Nimue’s hollow. The flames lick at your limbs as they dance in the depths of the hearth just ahead of the alcove you are nestled within. Aurora sits on the other side of the hut, quietly working through maps while Nimue rests nearby. You watch as her tired body struggles to keep her eyes open, nodding occasionally as she shakes her head in a desperate attempt to wake herself.

Aurora notices you watching her as she approaches slowly, “I’m sorry I’ve gotten you into this mess.” She seems apologetic. “I can’t help but feel at fault. If I didn’t know any better, I’d feel like the universe is trying to punish me.” Aurora pauses before continuing. “Maybe that’s why I can’t be with Loki, you know? Maybe in a past life I somehow deserved the fate I face in this one.”

Your stomach sinks. You can’t imagine the hurt she must feel, not being able to share the same ground as her soulmate. Nofel deserves that sort of pain. What’s worse is you recall a conversation you once had with Hel, where she admitted to being the reason the two cannot share space. You could tell Aurora now, but what good would that do for anyone involved?

Aurora interrupts your train of thought. “I must stay focused. Niflheim needs me. Everyone needs me.”

You frown as you watch Aurora pace back near the table cluttered with her many books and scrolls. It’s at this point you understand why Aurora keeps leaping blindly into portals. She’s running from her own broken heart. She wears the sorrow so plainly. It’s why she chooses this path, one that disregards her own pain, ever moving forward in an attempt to outrun it. Even deep in thought your exhaustion washes over you as you soon drift off.

A few short hours later Aurora wakes you with a gentle shake that grows more insistent as you refuse to stir. It’s still dark out as you groan in displeasure.

“It’s late. We have to go.”

Aurora looks as if she hasn’t slept, and reluctantly you join her. Nimue has packed you both rations, and just before you set off she beckons you back while Aurora finds herself distracted by anotherfel in conversation.

“Be careful, friend,” Nimue murmurs quietly. “Those you seek out are foe.”

Before you can ask Nimue to elaborate, Aurora calls for you impatiently. The two of you set off, beginning a two-day trek toward the location one of Aurora’s tips had shared with her.
